A night with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds, Pabst Theater

Blossoming from speculation of a solo album post-Oasis break up, Noel Gallagher has delivered once again with not one, but two solo albums with Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds. Returning to tour supporting the March 2015 LP Chasing Yesterday, Gallagher and his High Flying Birds are making waves with more than just covers of “Champagne Supernova” and other timeless Oasis singles.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds first release in 2011 did more than just tread water as some solo albums are left doing. The self-titled album rekindled what was lost following the breakup of the highly influential British rock band Oasis. Singles “If I Had a Gun…” let us reminisce a little while “AKA…What A Life” put a new twist on a familiar sound. Both in their gritty form heard at Milwaukee’s Pabst Theater performance were easily recognizable and as solid as his previous work.

Fans warmed the welcome just a bit more with shouts of “happy birthday” to Gallagher celebrating his 48th birthday just a day prior on the 29th, while other fans haggled him with “ohh Noel Gallagher say ohh Noel Gallagher” chants he did not seem too thrilled about, grinning them off.

Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds have continued to clench that British-pop vibe that’s made the music so identifiable – toned down anthemic-like jams and fusion of vintage pop and rock. Much of Gallagher’s upbeat material moved the first half of the set right along, it taking a light cover of Oasis’ “Champagne Supernova” tucked away mid-set to even things out.

An immersive and laid back experience was presented rather well, fans responding to old Oasis his just as enthusiastically as Noel Gallagher’s solo material.

Chasing Yesterday‘s single “In The Heat of the Moment” rivals his other top single from 2011 “If I Had a Gun…”. Noel Gallagher’s High Flying Birds could be seen jamming right along, but other additions to the setlist slowed the set’s pace, especially after “In The Heat of the Moment” and “Lock All The Doors”, its guitar riffs reminding me heavily of “Morning Glory”.

Looping back to his roots for the encore, Noel Gallagher and his High Flying Birds fired away at Oasis’ “Masterplan” and “Don’t Look Back in Anger” with a favorite from the self-titled solo debut, “AKA..What a Life”.

Noel Gallagher’s charming second solo visit to Milwaukee seemed as enjoyable as his first, a nearly full house in a historic theater was fitting for the band and evolution of song he’s crafted on his own.

Setlist: Do the Damage, (Stranded On) The Wrong Beach, Everybody’s on the Run, Fade Away, In the Heat of the Moment, Lock All the Doors, Riverman, The Death of You and Me, You Know We Can’t Go Back, Champagne Supernova, Whatever, Dream On, The Dying of the Light, The Mexican, AKA…Broken Arrow, Digsy’s Dinner, If I Had a Gun…, The Masterplan, AKA… What a Life!, Don’t Look Back in Anger
