Immortal – For Today

From the chant of “Fearless” to the gritty breakdowns of “My Confession,” the Sioux City Christian-metalcore band For Today has come a long way since their previous releases. Their new album, Immortal, out May 29th, is a step up (and in the right direction) from their earlier releases.

Although the simple breakdowns and sometimes repetitive lyrics get in the way of my full enjoyment of this metal five-piece powerhouse, I keep coming back for more of the well intentioned, but under powered breakdowns and melodic chants.

Although it sounds superior to their previous work, For Today still includes their traditional beliefs of Christianity in the undertones of many of the songs. This isn’t a bad thing, but if you’re not a Christian or don’t enjoy For Today’s roots then this or their other releases might not be for you.

The fact that they’re Christian shouldn’t be a deciding factor for you to love or hate this band though. In fact many metalcore bands have strong Christian beliefs, but don’t make it as apparent as For Today.

Immortal doesn’t really have a wow factor, with the exception of a few songs, but its grown up feel and togetherness of the band signal that they’re beginning to work very hard toward their dreams. Solid breakdowns and an overall stronger sound impressed me, especially when compared to previous material coming from these guys.

“My Confession” easily stood out thanks to it’s heavy hitting vocals and punchy rhythm guitar accented by a swirling lead. Chanting “deliver us” throughout, For Today isn’t afraid to show their faith through passionate and extremely energetic music that I think will take off and get really big in the next few years.
