Slipknot crush sixth Rock USA
Rock USA roared into its sixth year, Slipknot headlining the mid-July Friday night show. Ditching classic rock for this 3-day run, Rock USA recruited Slipknot, Disturbed, Alice in Chains, Five Finger Death Punch, and Shinedown for this go round.
It had been a rocky start for Rock USA 2016. Tightened security and the passing of a fan on festival grounds before the noise even began has set a sobering tone for the rock fest. Rock USA runs 3 days instead of its sister Country USA’s 5.
Slipknot’s Corey Taylor has been making his rounds in the news lately, calling out fans for their phone usage during his shows. He didn’t seem to have issues with Rock USA and fans turned out to respect that and enjoy the show.
Taylor’s vocals were the best I’ve heard out of the handful of Wisconsin shows in the past years. Much of the show was on point, however this tour dropped the elaborate stage props and lacked pyro. .5 The Gray Chapter and hits from their early albums were the key focus for Friday’s show, ending with a hard hitting encore; Surfacing, Duality, and Spit It Out. If anything Slipknot sure felt at home. It doesn’t get any more Midwest than a rock concert in the middle of a farm field.
Slipknot’s .5: The Gray Chapter is coming up on two years old in October but has been the staple of the recent tour history. Prior to that, All Hope Is Gone was released in 2008, given little attention in comparison to the band’s 2014 album and original hits.
Throughout the past few years Slipknot has had its ups and downs, but with the hit release of .5 The Gray Chapter and being on the receiving end of nominations for Grammys, Slipknot may be entering a second era with a lot left to create.
Rock USA began Friday with Five Finger Death Punch headlining. Alice In Chains closes out the 3-day bid with other festival frequent Shinedown.
