Summerfest continues full steam

Yet another foggy night forced the annual Summerfest Big Bang fireworks display to be postponed another night. Originally scheduled for opening day, the display was first cancelled and pushed to tonight,┬ábut continued poor conditions forced festival organizers to continue to wait in an effort to avoid issues experienced the year prior by US Bank’s fireworks show.

While the rain held off, the heat did not stick around. Inland felt like summer while the lakefront was stuck in fall. Attendance seemed to be down, but that may be due to more people settling in for the Lady Gaga show headlining the Marcus Amphitheater. But settled isn’t the word for Gaga’s fans. Many were just as interesting as the controversial pop star herself.

Other than Gaga, one of the night’s biggest attractions turned was hip-hop star B.o.B. Fans crowding the Miller Lite Oasis stage waited patiently all day for the 10pm performance to come around – but even with the day long tradition of camping out it just wasn’t the same without the toasty weather. Screaming fans kept busy with Kid Cut Up for the few hours leading up to B.o.B.’s performance leaving a smile on nearly everyone’s face.

Blues guitarist Kenny Wayne Shepherd continued the more adult contemporary vibe that the BMO Harris Pavilion has going on. As a seated venue, the acts are more held back and relaxing when compared to the pools of people flocking to other ground stages. His bleeding riffs could be heard throughout the general area of the pavilion and mixed well with the lakeside atmosphere.

St. Lucia took the 8pm slot but with a large delay thanks to two of their techs being stuck on American Airlines flights. Fans were growing a little restless, but got over it as soon as St. Lucia returned to the stage to perform.

The festival may be chilly, but it’s a refreshing change from years past where temperatures often exceeded 90 degrees. You’ll be happy you brought a light jacket by the end of the night.

Going into the weekend, Summerfest takes a turn away from pop and goes country with Brad Paisley on Friday and Luke Bryan on Saturday. Find the rest of the weekend schedule at
