Up close with John Butler Trio, Pabst Theater

Weaving in and out of music festivals and one off indoor shows, John Butler Trio extended their reach the Milwaukee’s Pabst Theater, performing with Ethan Tucker for a near-capacity show in the historic 3-level venue.

Opening with a fiery new cut from his most recent Flesh and Blood set up the night, the album showing off a mix of John Butler Trio’s song writing and musical talents. A mellow “Cold Wind” quickly rose up with John Butler’s merging and phasing back and forth between traditional acoustic and a warm and gritty near-electric guitars with just one in hand.

The trio quickly ventured into April Uprising, dedicating “I’d Do Anything” to soldiers of all countries around the world to make it home safe to their families. The extended live version began with a seemingly familiar guitar solo before breaking into the intro of the highly popular song.

Breaking up the show, John Butler exemplified his immense connection with an acoustic guitar through “Ocean”. Fans too young to walk and fans who’ve been around for quite some time could be seen glued to the stage for the mesmerizing solo-performed song.

While the Trio crafts an intense live experience, John Butler is the clear centerpiece and leader having covered his dual role of vocalist and guitarist since the inception. More of a full-bodied supported solo act, John Butler Trio moves away from the idea of a jam band and into something in between it and a guitarist with a some crafty lyrics.

More of the show sided on an explosive and high profile take on John Butler’s music, however that took a back seat from time to time, making the show more intimate for anyone in the house, whether hugging the stage or on the mezzanine looking down.
